Beautiful Devon is a highly photographic book, largely a series of photo essays showcasing many of the county’s most beautiful places and liveliest annual events.

Intended primarily as a photographic memento of Devon, all photography and words are by Nigel Hicks. Beautiful Devon is intended to appeal to anyone with a love of Devon, whether visitor or resident, as well as to anyone with a love of evocative travel photography.

An outline of Beautiful Devon
The book starts off with an introductory chapter, the only part of the book with any extensive text, and is followed by four photo essays (with extended captions) that home in on one region of Devon.

Chapter One provides a summary of the lie of the land and the coast, introduces some of Devon’s urban areas, both large and small, and contrasts these with the countryside and coasts. There is also an overview of farming, fishing and tourism in the county.

Chapter Two is a photo essay presenting Exeter and east Devon, the city, the Exe estuary, the coast and the agricultural inland areas.

Chapter Three’s photo essay tours along Devon’s south coast, the hub of the county’s tourism, from Torbay in the east to Plymouth in the west.

Chapter Four presents a photo essay of Dartmoor and the heart of Devon, the former’s wildness and ruggedness contrasted against the rich agricultural landscape that surrounds it and which makes up so much of the county.

Chapter Five showcases through its photo essay Devon’s north coast, starting with the Devonian part of Exmoor National Park, passing through the magnificent Taw and Torridge estuary, the north coast’s fabulous surfing beaches, and ending with the rugged Atlantic cliffs of the Hartland area.
